The
Pickup
You will have to experiment with the proper location of the pickup on your berimbau because (1) the instrument is handmade and (2) no two gourds are alike. When experimenting, adhere the pickup to the gourd somewhere near the bridge using a piece of gaffer’s tape. The pickup disc’s metal side should be against the gourd, and the tape should stick to the gourd and the disc’s plastic side. Permanent mounting requires super glue (cyanoacrylate).
Jack The 1/4″ jack is attached to the base of the gourd using a self-adhesive dual-lock hook-and-loop strip.
Usage Tips Different performance techniques will take on new dimensions when amplified, plus amplification brings out many of the berimbau’s tonal subtleties. Try a variety of approaches to develop a balanced sound.
When equipped with a BIG SoundSpot pickup, a berimbau can be played through guitar or other instrument amplifiers. For P.A. and recording applications, a high-quality direct box such as as the D-TAR Solstice or Equinox is suggested.

The
Pickup
Double-sided adhesive tape works well to hold the pickup in place. Make sure that the pickup’s metal side faces the tape. For less permanent installations, use a piece of gaffer’s tape, pressing it firmly around the pickup to ensure that it is tight against the soundboard. Tape the cord to the top to keep it from rattling.
Jack The 1/4″ jack is taped to the narrow side of the instrument using a self-adhesive dual-lock hook-and-loop strip.
Usage Tips The BIG SoundSpot-equipped hammer dulcimer can be plugged into any amplifier or P.A. For extra control, a preamp can be beneficial.
Note: You can run the BIG SoundSpot’s output to an electronic tuner to aid tuning the instrument. For P.A. and recording applications, a high-quality direct box such as as the D-TAR Solstice or Equinox is suggested.

Harmonica  20100615181301

Applying
The
Pickup
The pickup can be attached to either the outside or inside of the harmonica. The metal side of the pickup disc must be attached to the harmonica with super glue (cyanoacrylate). To improve adhesion, the area of the harmonica where the pickup is to be glued should be rubbed lightly with fine sandpaper and then cleaned with alcohol and allowed to dry before the super glue is applied.
Larger harmonicas benefit from having the pickup mounted inside on the reed block, while smaller models sound better with the pickup glued onto the metal case’s exterior.
Jack A 1/8″ mini jack is attached to the pickup. It should be mounted to the pickup with a self-adhesive dual-lock hook-and-loop strip.
Usage Tips You can play the harmonica through most amplifiers. Note, though, that the pickup is very sensitive, and therefore you should keep hand movement (tapping, rubbing, etc.) to a minimum. Otherwise, these sounds will be amplified along with the harmonica’s tones. For P.A. and recording applications, a high-quality direct box such as as the D-TAR Solstice or Equinox is suggested.           Pickup

The
Pickup
The BIG SoundSpot is a good choice for a quick-removal pickup. Use a piece of gaffer’s tape to hold it against the kalimba. Press the tape well around the pickup to hold it snug against the instrument. You can use super glue (cyanoacrylate) if you want a permanent installation.
Jack The BIG SoundSpot has a 1/4″ jack that should be attached to the narrow front of the instrument using the same method. Soundholes20100615181741

Usage Tips Almost every amp is suitable for use with kalimba. In addition, the pickup provides an excellent direct signal for recording. For P.A. and recording applications, a high-quality direct box such as as the D-TAR Solstice or Equinox is suggested.

The
Pickup
Either use a 1″-wide strip of gaffer’s tape to hold the pickup with its metal side against the log drum, or use super glue (cyanoacrylate).  20100615181849
Jack The 1/4″ jack should be attached to the drum’s side using a self-adhesive dual-lock hook-and-loop strip. Pickup — Output Jack
Usage Tips Avoid hitting the pickup with your mallets. Pickups on other percussion instruments, including temple blocks, bells, etc., can be connected to provide a single signal to an amp. Using a BIG SoundSpot, a log drum can be amplified through practically any amplifier. For P.A. and recording applications, a high-quality direct box such as as the D-TAR Solstice or Equinox is suggested.

Applying
The
Pickup
You can either adhere the pickup with a piece of double-sided adhesive tape, or a piece of gaffer’s tape (it should be placed over the plastic side of the pickup and pressed firmly around it). Even if the pickup doesn’t make full contact with the bridge—common on guitars with sculpted or sloping bridge surfaces—the pickup will still do its job. Note: To prevent rattling, tape the cord securely to the guitar’s top and/or side.
Jack The 1/4″ jack is attached to the guitar’s lower bout with a self-adhesive dual-lock hook-and-loop strip.
Usage Tips All guitar and instrument amplifiers can be used, as well as P.A. systems. The pickup can also be used as a direct input source for recording. For P.A. and recording applications, a high-quality direct box such as as the D-TAR Solstice or Equinox is suggested.
